We are very pleased to share the news that University of Waterloo professor Donna Strickland has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for her contribution in the field of laser physics. She becomes not only the first woman to win the physics prize since 1963, but also Waterloo’s first Nobel laureate. She conducted her Nobel-winning research in 1989 as part of her doctoral thesis at the University of Rochester in New York. In accordance with Charmaine Dean, vice-president research at the University of Waterloo, “Strickland exemplifies research excellence at Waterloo, as it has established the foundation for laser-based technologies from micromachining to laser eye surgery.”
