Dr. Michael Houghton, Researcher, and Director of the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute at the University of Alberta, has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Dr. Houghton and two other scientists had a crucial role in identifying the virus that causes hepatitis C. This discovery is credited with preventing millions of infections, by making it possible to screen for the virus in human blood and blood products.
Congratulations to Dr. Houghton and to the University of Alberta!
